Motor City Runner


Hey there!  I’m April.  Welcome to my little corner of the internet.  I started this blog in June of 2011 to document my running, fitness, and (mostly) healthy eating.

Along with way, I will share with you the daily randomness of my life with my husband Matt and our awesome Boxer, Diesel

*About April*

I’m 26 years old and I have lived in the greater Detroit Area my whole life.  I graduated high school in 2003 and then went straight to a university.  Honestly, it wasn’t for me.  I hated the vibe of a large university.  After a while, I withdrew and started working full time and getting certifications in my field of work.  While I won’t share specifically what I do for safety purposes, I will tell you that I work with children and I love it.

Matt and I have been married since September of 2008.  As much as we drive each other crazy love one another, we definetely work at our marriage and I’m proud to say we make it work.

*Fitness and Healthy Eating*

Those three words were never in my vocabulary up until about 6 months ago.  Growing up, we ate a lot of fast food and deep fried food.  My whole family is from the South, so you better believe that if it could be deep fried, we deep fried it.

I started having knee problems when I was 14.  That put me right at the beginning of high school.  I was planning on doing swimming, but the pain was too much so I didn’t do any sports through high school.  I was then diagnosed with a form of arthritus stemmimg from psoriasis.  As the years have went on, I know how to treat my knees and take care of them.


Ha!!  This is a total love hate relationship.  In January of 2010 I decided I wanted to start running.  I was literally sitting at my computer desk, looked at Matt, and said “I want to start running.”  Just like that.  I did a little research and found the couch to 5k program.  It was exactly what I needed to get to 3.1 miles. 

I worked and worked at it.  I am not a natural “runner.”  It is a fight every step of the way for me.  I hate the way I feel during running, but love the way I feel after. 

Right as I was getting comfortable with the 5k distance, my stepmom died and running took a backseat for the better part of a year. 

In January of 2011, I decided to try it again and just about died after running a mile.  I started up the 5k program again and then injured myself in a non running related way.  I took a few months off and focused on weights, spinning, zumba, and kickboxing.   

Then, one day I woke up and told myself I just wanted to do a slow 20 minute run.  Well, I got to the gym and FLEW through 3.1 miles.  I have been upping my mileage slowly but surely and I am now officially OBSESSED with running.  

I am finally signed up for some races so wish me luck!!

Cute puppy!! We have a 8 month old fawn boxer, Cassius….boxers are the best dogs 🙂

Yay!! Boxers are the best!! Of course, I think we might be a little partial!! 😉

Good luck on all your races! Saw that you finished better than you expected on your 5k… That’s awesome!

Thanks girl!! I started half marathon training today….eeekkk. Hopefully I don’t pass out and die while running 🙂
